Mind the Digital Gap is a Roy Fletcher Centre initiative that provides free digital skills training for adults in Shrewsbury. We help people build confidence and develop essential digital skills needed in today's world, from basic computer use to online safety and communication.
Our training is open to all adults in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve specific digital skills, we welcome learners of all ages and backgrounds. No prior experience is necessary.
Yes, all our digital skills training sessions are completely free. We believe that digital skills should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. There are no hidden costs or fees.
You will get the most benefit if you can bring your own laptop, tablet, or smartphone, as this lets you practise what you've learned at home. But don't worry if you don't have one, we have a small number of devices available for use during training sessions.
We cover a wide range of digital skills topics including:
- Basic computer skills (using a mouse, keyboard, touchscreen)
- Creating and using email accounts
- Online safety and protecting yourself from scams
- Setting secure passwords
- Video calling (Zoom, WhatsApp, etc.)
- Online job searching
- Using smartphones and tablets
- Accessing government services online
We can also tailor sessions to your specific needs and interests.
Getting started is easy! You can:
- Fill out our Get Started form online
- Call us or visit the Roy Fletcher Centre
- Attend one of our drop-in sessions
- Complete our Digital IQ Test to assess your current skills
We'll then arrange a self assessment to understand your needs and create a personalised learning plan.
The self assessment is a friendly, informal conversation where we learn about your current digital skills, what you'd like to learn, and how we can best support you. It helps us create a personalised learning plan tailored to your needs and goals. There's no test or exam - it's just a chat to understand how we can help you.
Session lengths vary depending on the type of training:
- One-to-one sessions: Typically 1 hour, but can be adjusted to suit your needs
- Drop-in support: Flexible - stay as long as you need
We work at your pace and ensure you're comfortable with the content before moving on.
